When It Is Time for Blocked Toilets

A plunger and a spot of persistence sorts some blocked toilets outright. Others are a signal that the real fault sits deeper in the pipe, no amount of plunging will touch that.

  • Water climbs toward the rim on a flush instead of draining down as usual
  • Flushing again just makes the water level climb higher, not lower
  • The bowl takes its time draining even though nothing looks obviously stuck
  • Gurgling comes from the shower or bath drain when the toilet flushes
  • A plunger buys you a few days at most before it's back
  • Water backs up in the toilet whenever the washing machine drains

Inside a Typical Blocked Toilets Job

Most call-outs start simple. A wipe, a nappy or too much paper caught in the trap clears with the right tool in a few minutes, with no need to pull the toilet off the floor.

Some need more than a plunger. A closet auger or an electric eel reaches further into the pan and the pipe beyond it, for a blockage sitting well past the first bend in the line.

A few point to something bigger. Repeated blockages on the same toilet, especially with gurgling from other fixtures at the same time, usually mean the problem sits in the branch line rather than the pan itself, and that's when we look further with a camera rather than reaching for the plunger again.

What Affects the Cost of Blocked Toilets

The bulk of blocked toilet jobs turn out fairly simple, and what we charge lines up with that.

  • Whether it clears with a plunger, auger or eel on the day
  • Whether the toilet needs to come off the floor to reach the blockage
  • How many fixtures are affected, when the trouble runs deeper than the pan
  • Access to the property and the bathroom itself
  • Cranebrook's newer stock, including the Waterside estate homes, generally runs on modern PVC branch lines that clear faster than the older branch lines under some 1970s and 1980s bathrooms

We confirm the price before we start. A straightforward clear is usually just the fixed job price on top of the $0 call-out, and we'll say so early if the job looks bigger than a first glance suggests.

What We See in Cranebrook Drains

Cranebrook's toilets sit on two fairly different types of plumbing depending on when the house went up.

Brick-veneer homes from the 1970s through the 1990s, which make up the bulk of the older stock here, run on branch lines that have simply had longer to wear and shift than anything built since.

Streets like Goldmark Crescent, built out in that same era, are where we see it most. A toilet that blocks more than once in a year there is usually telling us the branch line needs a look, not just another clear.

Newer estates, including the roughly 700 dwellings built at Waterside from 2010, run on PVC branch lines with a bit more room to work with.

Either way, what actually blocks a toilet is rarely paper. Wipes are the usual culprit, sold as flushable but nowhere near as quick to disintegrate as real toilet paper, and they snag on the smallest ridge in an older trap.

A handful of them tangled together is usually all it takes.

The Rules That Apply in NSW

Fixing a blocked toilet is drainage work in the eyes of NSW law, and only a licensed plumber is allowed to do it. Our team works under NSW licence #465156C on every blocked toilet job, the same as any other drainage call-out.

AS/NZS 3500 sets the standard for how a toilet's trap, pan and branch connection are meant to perform.

Where a repeated blockage points to a fault in the fixture itself rather than the line, we'll say so plainly instead of clearing it over and over and calling that a fix.

How the Job Runs and How Long It Takes

  1. Have a look first. The toilet gets inspected and we'll ask how the problem's been playing out lately, including whether it's happened before.
  2. Clear it properly. The auger or eel handles most blockages within the one visit, without needing to pull the toilet up at all.
  3. Check the wider line. More than one occurrence means the camera goes in to properly diagnose the branch line.
  4. Confirm and warranty. A full flush proves it before we pack up, and the labour on the fix itself is covered for life.

The Difference on a Blocked Toilets Job

It's an awkward job to have a stranger in your bathroom for, so we send fully licensed plumbers and gas fitters who treat it like any other trade call, no fuss made of it and no lecture about what got flushed down there.

We're a genuinely family-run business with more than ten years sorting Sydney's drains, which mostly means we've seen just about every version of this problem before and can tell early on which visits stay simple and which won't.

Blocked Toilets Across Cranebrook and Surrounding Areas

Where a toilet keeps blocking because something's wrong further down, blocked sewer work or a CCTV drain inspection gets to the actual cause rather than clearing the same symptom over and over. Kingswood, Werrington and Penrith sit right alongside Cranebrook on our usual patch.

Common questions

Common Blocked Toilets FAQs

Straight, honest answers about blocked toilets, from cost to how quickly we can get there.

How much should I expect to pay for a blocked toilet call-out?

A straightforward clear with an auger or eel is usually a modest, fixed call-out job, confirmed with you before we start. If it turns out to be a branch line issue, we'll quote that separately rather than folding it into the first number.

Is it possible to clear tree roots without digging up the yard?

Yes, in most cases. If a blocked toilet turns out to be roots further down the branch line, jetting or relining can usually deal with it without excavation, and a full dig stays the last resort rather than the first option.

Is there anything I need to do before you arrive to fix the blocked toilet?

Just avoid flushing again once you know it's blocked, since that risks it overflowing onto the bathroom floor and beyond. Everything else, including cleanup, is on us.

Do you need to be a licensed plumber to fix a blocked toilet?

Yes. Fixing it is drainage work under NSW law either way, and our team holds licence #465156C.

Can I get someone out today for a blocked toilet?

Yes. We know a blocked toilet is often the only one in the house, so we treat these as a priority call-out and aim to be there today, weekends included.

Do you charge a call-out fee for blocked toilets?

No, never, not once. The call-out is $0, and you only pay the fixed price for the actual job once we've confirmed it with you.
